Betty Wright: The Movie

The Roots get it oh so Wright.

Who doesn’t love Betty Wright? If your answer is you, stop reading right now.

After a decade of working behind the scenes on other artist’s albums, the vocal powerhouse who first made a name for herself with the smash-hit Tonight is the Night in the 1970s (it has been sampled and turned into house songs) teams up with hip hop’s original live band, The Roots.

Together with ?uestlove, the most recognisable drummer in hip hop, Wright produced the album that opens with the feel-good Old Songs.

In what seems like a freestyle, she name-drops Patti, Gladys, Chaka, MJB, Erykah and India. Throughout the album, she packs new rhyming flavour and matches it with melodies that remind you of The Isley Brothers. The Movie is the perfect meeting point for vintage r&b/soul and hip hop.

Lenny Williams, Joss Stone, Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg are featured. – Helen Herimbi
