Britain's Duchess Catherine has sparked controversy by visiting a hotel owned by the Sultan of Brunei.

The 32-year-old royal attended a wedding at London's The Dorchester hotel on Friday, but her visit to the famed establishment comes after numerous celebrities vowed to boycott hotels owned by the Sultan, who recently introduced harsh laws against homosexuals.

Catherine is thought to have attended the wedding of her cousin Adam Middleton to interior designer Rebecca Poynton.

A source told the Daily Mail newspaper: "The wedding was a big boost for the hotel... It shows that the royals will not let the Brunei business keep them away."

Catherine was joined at the ceremony by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, her brother James Middleton and her sister Pippa Middleton.

Michael's brother Richard is the father of the groom, the royal's first cousin.

The Dorchester wedding comes after celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Richard Branson and Vogue editor Anna Wintour vowed not to stay at hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei, following his decision to introduce Islamic Sharia law into the country.

The new laws mean homosexuals could be stoned to death.
