Doom for Dominic

SOUTH African viewers aren’t too cut up by Dominic Neill getting the boot in last night’s Idols results show.

In fact, it was rather unsurprising given that he secured a bottom three spot for the fourth time. Joining him were Monde Msutwana, who was saved from being in the bottom two, and a visibly anxious Melissa Allison.

So what saw him alienate fans? Okay, he didn’t really have that many to start with – aside from his family and friends.

Sorry, but one has to call a spade a spade – and, at 19, his vocal abilities still haven’t bonded with that vital tool called ‘rhythm’.

In Sunday’s Inspirational Choir Spectacular, supported by the Drakensberg Boys Choir, Neill opted for a twist on Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’. And his performance did transport the judges to heaven.

An unimpressed Gareth Cliff said: “I think all these weeks in the bottom three are maybe getting to you”. Unathi Msegana echoed that sentiment, while Randall Abrahams predicted he will be in the firing line.

It was Abrahams who dealt that crushing blow that the judges weren’t going to use their one save on him. Maybe Neill’s cringe worthy attempt to woo them was the final straw.

Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don’t – at least Neill has plenty time to find a new vocation. Just saying!

Catch the Idols Top 6 on M-Net and Mzansi Magic on Sunday at 5.30pm. Or you can attend the live screening on Friday at the Mosaïek Teatro. - The Star
