Two strangers on the road to tying the knot try to avoid attaching the knot to a noose.

Marriage is not a walk in the park, as many people who aren’t named Beyoncé love to tell everyone within earshot. Latice Crawford and Jeff Spain plan to show us just how hard and, in some places, easy it gets on Almost Married. This new reality show started on Top TV’s Black Entertainment Television on Valentine’s Day and will air every Thursday. Almost Married is a spin-off series from the hugely popular Sunday Best show.

The latter is a reality singing competition that allows budding gospel singers to sing for their supper and some recognition. It is judged by American gospel giants, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, the Mary Mary sisters and is hosted by Kirk Franklin. So in essence: Sunday Best is something of a big deal in the Christian communities in the US. So naturally, having a new show ricochet off the ratings that Sunday Best has garnered seems to be a good idea.

Almost Married features former Sunday Best contestants, Latice and Jeff. They first realised that there was spark between them on the set of the second season of this series. While Jeff may not have always been sure about singing gospel as a career path, Latice, who is a preacher’s daughter knew that she would belting out to beats with a bible in hand. She also says she knew that her future husband’s name would be Jeff because she says God told her.

The couple have their faith and their love for music in common but as this reality show proves, that doesn’t mean that they are a perfect pair. You’ll see them struggle about who they are as individuals in what seems to be a divinely orchestrated union. There will also be some blissful times on screen as well as how they navigate the idea of heavenly promises and earthly pleasures. Can they get a witness? Now bear in mind that the show is called Almost Married so you’ll have to tune into BET to find out whether Latice actually makes it down the aisle or if the pressures of life get to them before they can say “I Do”.

• Almost Married airs on BET (Top TV Channel 190) every Thursday at 10.30pm.
