The Masque Theatre is looking for non-professional actors for a production of Michael Frayn’s Benefactors.

Coleen van Staden will direct the play for the Muizenberg Dramatic Society.

Benefactors is a philoso-phical comedy written by one of the few English writers to straddle drama and prose fiction successfully.

It was originally set in the 1960s and revolves around an idealistic architect, David, and his wife Jane, and their relationship with the cynical Colin and his wife Sheila.

David is trying to build new homes to replace slum housing but is gradually forced into building skyscrapers, despite his initial aversion.

Sheila is his secretary, though it is unclear whether she is helping him.

As the title suggests, the play explores the difficulties inherent in helping people, and in being helped.

Van Staden’s version will move between the 1960s and the 80s, and the cast members required are two male actors between 30 and 50 and two female actors between 30 and 40.

Auditions are on Saturday, March 22 at 2.30pm, with call-backs on Thursday, March 27 at 7.30pm at the MADS Clubhouse, False Bay Business & Tourism Centre on Promenade Road, Zandvlei.

Rehearsals start on April 16 and the production’s dates are from July 25 to August 2.
