Bridgetown Theatre Company will be presenting a two-in-one show, Moves, showcasing the drama and musical abilities of the company, at the Artscape Theatre Complex.

Moves is written by Theo EDavids and sees the first half showcased in the form of a comedy, Moves 1.

“It’s about what happens when a vulnerable 40-year-old woman discovers that her bread-winning husband has married three other women while on a so-called ‘working contract’ in London. So she decides to take a stand and claim what’s rightfully hers,” says Davids.

The second half is a musical dance drama of a revelation when the worlds of spiritual and hip hop dancing and singing meet. “It displays some traditional dance and singing, some used in unconventional and imaginative ways and some of which are pure invention.

“The merging of the spiritual and hip hop dance forms and singing takes you into the realms of dance not seen before and singing not heard before.

“What if a principled young woman learns that her erstwhile liturgical dance partner, beloved sister and community youth leader intends to join an unprincipled hip hop dance group in order to be near her love interest, in defiance of their strict religious doctrine?”

With music by Andre Quimpo and choreography by Lydia Johnson and Nathan Kleinsmith, it is produced by Ernest Samuels and Miriam Bux,

Davids says Moves “refers to dance and life, making moves for change”.

After its performance at Artscape, Moves will go to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown from June 30 to July 8.

* Catch Moves on June 6-9 at 8pm. Tickets cost R60. Book at Computicket.
