THE continued partnership between Durban’s Flatfoot Dance Company and artSPACE sees another cutting edge offering at the gallery this week.

Resident choreographer Sifiso Kitsona Khumalo will premier his newest work utalago (loosely translated as horizon).

In an interview with Tonight Khumalo explained his creation: “Whether you embark on a journey from Cape to Cairo, in search of something better, it is often only to find that what we were looking for was right where we were in the first place.”

He continued: “What we are looking for is often what we have, but we become so trapped in looking for what we want, that we don’t see that what we want is what we have already.”

Khumalo said the piece has an African feel to it.

“It is very rounded with low movement.”

Performed by Khumalo and award-winning dancers Sifiso Majola, Tshediso Kabulu, Julia Wilson and Lerato Lipere; a press statement says utalago/ horizon also features the accompaniment of master drummer and musician, Njabulo Shabalala.

“I hope the audience will enjoy this piece and enjoy each one of us on stage. I hope they get what we are trying to portray, I hope they get the feel of that journey,” said Khumalo.

• Tickets available at artSPACE on the night.
