A POPULAR play, Nkanyezi – The Star, returns to the stage this week, this time at The Playhouse.

Presented by the Stable Theatre in association with The Playhouse Company, Nkanyezi – The Star will run at the Playhouse Loft Theatre from Friday to December 15.

Created by the award-winning team of director Thuli Dumakude, musical director Faca Kulu and scriptwriter andassistant director Caroline Smart, Nkanyezi – The Star is a coming-of-age story set in present-day South Africa.

The audience is welcomed into the presence of four young women, from different racial and cultural backgrounds, as they prepare to celebrate their inaugural year in the fashion business, recalling their journey to this point. The evening progresses with a trip down memory lane, and a few surprises along the way.

Tonight caught up with Robyn McHarry, the newest member to join the cast.

“I play the role of Joan. I think this is a lovely play. I liked the multi-cultural and racial diversity of the script. There are so many things in South Africa that can unite us above race and culture, and this is what this production is about.”

McHarry encouraged the public to see the show: “It’s a youthful production and it’s always good to support local productions. But it also addresses issues that we all deal with; from relationships to family to business… things that we deal with and can relate to,” she said.

In a statement Thanduxolo Zulu, the Stable Theatre’s centre manager, said: “It is with great pleasure that the Stable Theatre accepted the invitation to present this production in association with The Playhouse Company.

“It is an indication that our organisation is now making itself felt as a viable theatre venue that encourages new work.”

The cast also features Khanyisile Jwaha, Faca Kulu, Lyschelle Linderboom, Thabani Mahlobo and Derosha Moodley.

`• Nkanyezi – The Star will run at the Playhouse Loft from Friday to December 14 at 7.30pm. There are matinee performances on Sunday and December 15 at 2pm. Tickets are R65 at Computicket.
