Join academy just for laughs

Who says Christians don’t like to have a good laugh? There is this misconception that if someone can catch the spirit they can’t catch a joke.

For years, people like Bobby Jones and Steve Harvey have been working hard to demystify this theory. You know Mr Shiny Long Suit himself (that’s Harvey if you don’t get that reference) is one of the most foul-mouthed comedians out here but you know what the Word says, he who is without sin should cast the first stone.

And that’s where the gospel according to tonight will end today. We’ll leave the funnies up to the comedians who will perform at the Lord, Make Me Laugh! – A Gospel Comedy Show in Sandton this weekend.

Hosted by popular comedian, Kedibone Mulaudzi, this show is the brainchild of Christian lifestyle read, Parable Magazine, and encourages people to get out of their comfort zones and actually see and hear for themselves whether a person can be funny without compromising their religious beliefs or morality. Naturally, there are a few names one wouldn’t recognise on the bill for this show.

They are The Napsta – who is called The King Of Christian Comedy – as well as Ditsebe.Com, Carvin H Goldstone (who is called South Africa’s Cleanest Comedian) and lastly, TD Jokes. That’s genius! TD Jokes? Come on, you can’t hate on that name.

Word is an American poet, Cirvant, will also grace the stage but chances are, he’s not going to be making any jokes. Perhaps, if he wants to, he can be taught how to become a comedian.

But first, he’d have to change his citizenship and become a South African. That’s if he wants to be schooled by The South African Comedy Academy.

As part of the Youth Month celebrations and the launch of the Soweto Theatre, the academy will be looking for 25 young people to train in the art of making people laugh. That way, the budding comedians can also laugh all the way to the bank, see?

The academy says its graduates include Kedibone Mulaudzi, Tumi Morake, Eugene Khoza and Trevor Noah.

So if you fancy yourself as someone who could reach the ranks of these funny men and women and are between the ages of 18 and 35 then you could win a scholarship to take classes with the academy professionals.

Who knows, if you can deliver a set that you could perform in front of pastors then you could find yourself performing at gospel shows and more too.
