A parents’ programme, running every Wednesday for eight weeks by Wordworks, was held recently at Masi library, with the 10 parents who completed the course, graduating.
The programme was facilitated by Ncumisa Mpame and Sheilla Mqalu, both pre-school teachers from Masi, and adult educator Jenny Birkett from Kommetjie. Masi library offered their venue for the course and librarian Veronica Mlambisa, gave up her evenings to keep the library open after hours for the participants. Wordworks offers training for pre-school and Grade R to 3 teachers and parents in under-resourced areas.
Their Home-School Partnerships Programme supports parents by building a better understanding of how children learn, and offering skills and resources for supporting their children’s learning and language skills.
If you are interested in volunteering an afternoon a week to spend at the Masi library helping young children with their reading, writing and number skills, you can contact Edeline at the Wordworks office at 021 7889233 or email info@wordworks.org.za
