Forfeiture unit swoops on 'mine syndicate'

    September 18 2003 at 08:57AM

The assets forfeiture unit on Wednesday confiscated goods worth about R5-million from Ian William York, the director of Carlian Services, suppliers of equipment to the mining industry.

Special director Omar Rabaji confirmed that among the assets so far seized were three fully-furnished luxury residential properties on the Cambridge Gardens golf estate and another property at Northmead, Johannesburg.

Two holiday villas on the San Lameer golf estate on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast were also seized, together with a number of vehicles, including two Mercedes Benz.

Rabaji said various bank accounts registered to shell companies were being frozen.

Rabaji said that York had been using Carlian Services since 1996 to channel funds derived from criminal activities. His modus operandi was to steal rock drill spares and sell them back to the mine.

York's activities were brought to a halt in October 2002 when he was arrested at South Deep gold mine on a charge of stealing and selling R10 000 worth of mining parts.

Rabji said that York had admitted to this in a statement. He appeared in court and was released on a warning.

Rabaji said in the light of further investigations new charge sheets were being formulated against York. - Sapa
