A Soweto man was killed by his accomplices in a botched car hijacking, Johannesburg police said on Wednesday.

"Three armed men were trying to steal a Telkom repair vehicle and kidnap the driver when it seems they accidentally shot one another, and only managed to get his cellphone," said police spokesperson Inspector Kay Makhubela.

"Instead of taking the repair van, they sped off in their getaway car and rushed to Zola hospital and just dropped the injured suspect there and then went to the victim's family home and told them he was at the hospital," he said.

The 32-year-old man died on arrival at the clinic.

Makhubela said that the dead man's family did not know the two who came to their home but recognised the car as their son was always driving it although it did not belong to him.

Police have opened a murder case and are investigating the robbery and attempted hijacking. - Sapa
