Kampala - An upsurge in violence in Uganda's remote Karamoja region has left more than 50 people dead over the past month, according to military and United Nations statistics obtained on Tuesday.

The Ugandan military killed 21 Karimojong warriors in the first two weeks of June, eastern region army spokesperson Captain Henry Obbo said.

In May, more than 32 people died during inter-tribal clashes and battles with government soldiers, according to a recent report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

"Continued aggressive activities by illegally armed Karimojong ensured that the general security environment in the region remained sensitive and unpredictable," OCHA said.

Karamoja was for years destabilised by well-armed warriors who launch massive cattle raiding operations against neighbouring tribes and are not afraid to engage the army when pursued.

The Ugandan army has long attempted to disarm the semi-nomadic Karimojong while civil society and government groups have tried to promote agriculture in a society that has historically been characterised by nomadic cattle grazing. - AFP
