The South African Police Service considers Julius Malema a VIP whose life is in danger. Now it will cost taxpayers anything up to R300 000 a month to ensure no harm comes to him.

Opposition parties have blasted "the wastage" on "this little man", calling the ANC Youth League president a coward as reports emerge of him using blue lights in his private car to avoid roadblocks.

But Police Ministry spokes-man Zweli Mnisi said Malema had received death threats.

"(Malema) wrote a letter to the SAPS advising of his request to receive such protection as he believed his life was in danger," he said.

"Crime Intelligence, upon receiving this request, conducted an investigation which then revealed that indeed there were threats to his life."

Mnisi said Malema was then given the choice of using either the police's VIP Protection Services - the unit that guards ministers and other dignitaries - or private bodyguards.

The SAPS would foot the bill for both options.

Mnisi was unable to reveal the cost of Malema's protection, but private security experts said guarding high-profile figures could cost anything from R4 000 to R12 000 a day.

This includes hotels, food, night shifts and out-of-city allowances but would exclude salaries.

In September, the Saturday Star revealed that Malema was living beyond his means - with a luxurious Sandown home and a C63 Mercedes-Benz.

At the time it was estimated that he would have to earn more than R50 000 a month to meet his obligations.

This week, Beeld newspaper reported how the ANCYL leader's bodyguards, who drive him around in a Range Rover, were caught speeding at more than 100km/h in a 60km/h zone in his hometown, Seshego, in Limpopo.

Now Malema is being investigated by the Transport Department for allegedly threatening nine traffic police offi- cers at the roadblock for having the temerity to stop him.

Judging by the many hateful comments herein against Malema, it is indeed justified for Malema to have bodyguards. Guys, you obviously hate the decision by the SAPS to guard Malema because you hate him, that same hatred is one good reason for the SAPS to increase the level of protection to Malema. If Malema just printed these comments and submitted them to the SAPS today with a request to highten the level of security, all of you would have successfully motivated for his cause. Who is to blame? Malema or all of you issuing threats and death wishes? Idiots! Besides, understand the law first before making idiotic comments. There are so many South Africans who are guarded 24 hrs by the state who are not necessarily VIPs. Malema may not be a VIP but if he is at risk, he qualifies for protection. It is the media that is confusing you by saying Malema is a VIP instead of saying 'Malema in Danger' or 'Malema at Risk'. Those who take decisions to protect do not do so because the subject is a VIP but because of the extent of the risk!

MusaWeNkosi what does VIVA mean? Does it mean Viva Voce, Viva Las Vegas, Viva penata, village idiots very angry or Viva, if we say it and shout it we do not think all that clearly if at all. Hey wait, maybe it makes you bulletproof!

@MusaWeNkosi "My Leadership speaks for me, a young BLACK intellect who's mental capacity surprises the imperialists" a young black intellect who couldn't pass woodwork! Who hasn't got a matric! What intellect is that? What imperialists are you talking about? the last I looked at the flag pole outside the Union buildings it was our national flag not that of the UK, USA even China (yet). If you look up to him as an intellect what level does that make you? Your leadership speaks without thinking... case in point is his recent blabbering for a boycott against Nedbank cancelling sponsorship of athletics in South Africa. He got all the facts wrong and has had to apologise. He also blabbers about nationalisation of mines and then the governement including Coasatu have to tell the world that nationalisation is not governement policy. What does surprise South Africans is that he gets to speak about important issues at all given his level of intellect and understanding of economics and world affairs. He is an embarrassment, he is the court jester, the village idiot...

MusaWeNkosi the only issue you have is how far back in the line you are going to be for your food ration handout from the United Nations World Food Programme. Maybe you can give up your place for your president. Then again you can donate your share to him after his speech.

Such a feeble mind... Allow me to stoop to your level. Lets take your PC and sell it. With the proceeds we can get 10 families @ Zamimpilo a decent supper for tonight.

Absolute nonsense, this is one of the reasons we are still known as a third world country, that money could b used to feed the poor, or build another school, pay teachers, or used for job creation, the only reason Malemas life would b in danger in the first place is because of his big mouth, he says what he wants to who he wants, insulting people and showing he has no respect, then he expects us to pay for his protection? Count me out, who ever feels that he should have these body gaurds, should pay for it themselves, and not expect it of South Africans that are already struggling. When will the greed ever stop, u go around calling eachother brothers, but how can u let ur "brothers" starve while u drive a c63, while u live in a mansion, spending money without a care in the world.

Have you considered that perhaps you're being deceived by Malema?

Small minded people of South Africa, Let me unequivocally state that I fully agree with Cde Mnisi on the protection of my ANCYL President. Decerning your foul and vile 2 cents worth; All of your resentments and rivalry agains't my Leadership stems from the seed of jealousy. My Leadership speaks for me, a young BLACK intellect who's mental capacity surprises the imperialists. My President is Young, insistently vocal about my issues and will never be governed or controlled by marked lines set out by powers opposing transformation. VIVA my PRESIDENT VIVA.
