German artist Joerg Jozwiak has created a snowman which he believes will survive until next winter. And instead of melting in the summer sun, Jozwiak's snowman will thrive in the blazing heat.

There's nothing particularly special about the design: it's a classic three-ball snowman, wearing a red woollen hat and scarf. What is special, though, is the snowman's house.

The snowman is being stored in a glass-doored, solar-powered fridge, which will be enjoy a chilly room temperature of a steady -5°C - thanks to solar cells. The snowman will live in his solar-powered home until January 31, 2004.

According to Ananova.com, the project took two years to prepare, with scientists trying to work out exactly how many solar cells would be needed to keep the snowman "alive" at sub-zero temperatures.

Jozwiak’s project, entitled Yesterday's Snow, was put together in co-operation with Berlin Polytechnic College.

And since the snowman will be residing at the college for a full year, staff are planning to formally enrol him as a student on April 7. - Ananova.com
