Cape Town - A 71-year-old woman from Hilaal Farm in Klapmuts has been fined R900 for speeding at an astonishing 171km/h on the N1 highway near Paarl at the weekend.

Anna Kemp told provincial traffic officer Carlo Carolus that she had been on her way to church and was in a great hurry because she was late.

"When I saw her grey hair, I immediately knew the situation was not going to be easy," said Carolus.

He noticed that Kemp seemed a little nervous when he pulled her over.

'Luckily for me she did not cry'
"It looked as if she wanted to burst into tears when I approached her, but luckily for me she did not cry".

In another incident, Miles Jenkins, 29, from England, was fined R8 000 or one year's imprisonment by the Beaufort West magistrate's court after he was caught speeding in his C250 Mercedes Benz at a whopping 196km/h near the town. Jenkins paid the fine.

A spokesperson for the Provincial Traffic Department in Worcester, Kenny Africa, said the N1 was a "road of death" and the department had bought five new devices which could trap speedsters up 1km away, and could also be used at night.

"We are doing everything in our power to put an end to speeding on our national roads," he said.

"We want to send out a message to motorists to beware, because we now have the necessary equipment and we will catch you," said Africa.
