Joburgers woke up to a winter wonderland on Wednesday morning, with snow blanketing most parts of the city.

The last time it snowed in Joburg was on September 10 1981.

One person died on Tuesday night in the Joburg CBD because of the icy weather.

Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the homeless man, who has yet to be identified, had died near to the Noord Street taxi rank in the early hours.

On Tuesday, the city saw lawns, trees and pavements covered in sheets of white. Cars parked outside overnight were on Wednesday morning under heaps of snow.

One father, Johan Schlebusch of Crosby, said his children, Louise, 10, and Shaun, 11, had got out of bed at midnight and played in the snow until 3am this morning.

Louise said she was thrilled.

"My ears are cold and I"m freezing," she said as she dove onto the snow-covered ground and rolled down the hill.

Several other families "with excited children in tow" were seen walking to the park.

Weather forecasters have predicted "a pretty miserable day" for most of the country.
