Police shot and killed seven armed men who broke into a security company's cash depot in Polokwane on Sunday morning.

Responding to a call, police went to a break-in in progress at the Protea Coin Group's cash depot in Nirvana, and found the suspected thieves in the building, national police spokesperson
Nonkululeko Mbatha said in a statement.

"It seems that they had already tampered with the alarm system and hacked their way through burglar bars into the main vault of the cash depot."

Realising they were surrounded, the robbers opened fire on police, who shot back. Three firearms and house breaking equipment were found on the would-be robbers, who were wearing gloves and balaclavas.
