Two women were murdered and one was found severely assaulted in overnight crime in Soweto, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

A 40-year-old woman was the target of at least 13 bullets fired into a van in which she and her boyfriend were sitting in Zondi on Monday night, Inspector Kay Makhubele said.

She died but her boyfriend was not hurt.

Further west, in Dobsonville, a 31-year-old woman died at the hands of her boyfriend who strangled her in his house. This man was arrested and would appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon.

In Mofolo, a 22-year-old woman was severely assaulted by her former boyfriend who had kidnapped her.
