A R20 000 reward has been offered for a person who will help the police arrest the people who torched Durban's Lamontville township taxi rank on Tuesday night, the Lamontville Taxi Association said.

"Our offices were burnt down on Tuesday night. We lost very important files and furniture. We offered a reward of R20 000 because we want to make sure that the perpetrators are brought to book," association chairperson Vela Ndebele said on Wednesday.

He said the association believed that the offices were deliberately set alight.

Police spokesperson Captain Mhlonishwa Khawula said the police were the first to see offices burning in Lamontville.

"The offices were situated just a stone's throw away from the police station. Police officers saw the fire just after 12 midnight. We are investigating the matter," he said.

Ndebele said the incident happened just a few days after the association had chosen a new chairperson. - Sapa
