An ambulance driver from the Eastern Cape was admitted to hospital and his assistant seriously injured early on Saturday after they were attacked while returning from an accident scene.
Eastern Cape provincial health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the incident occurred between Maclear and Eliot at about 3am on Saturday. He feared the attack may have had racial overtones.
"The two (ambulance) drivers were leaving the scene of an accident at Ugie when they came across two bakkies on the side of the road.
"The four men in the bakkies tried to stop the ambulance, but the drivers continued," said Kupelo.
"They (the bakkies' occupants) followed the ambulance and forced it to stop. The four men then began assaulting the driver of the ambulance without saying anything."

Kupelo said the assistant, who was also injured, managed to escape.
The four attackers were white men, leading Kupelo to fear the assaults were racially motivated.
"The matter has been reported to police. No arrests have been made yet," said Kupelo.
"We are going to be liaising with the police commissioner to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. As a department we condemn the attack," he said. - Sapa
