He was crowned South Africa's first Pop Idol and beat British star Will Young in the recent World Idols competition. Next on the agenda is a trip to the beach to get some sun before hitting the studio to work on his next single.

Following a positive response from the international audiences of the World Idols competition, Cape Town's Heinz Winckler says it's great to be home but he can't wait to launch his music career overseas.

The Cape Argus caught up with Winckler on Sunday and asked him about his experience in the United Kingdom.

"I had loads of fun, it was my first time overseas and it was a hectic experience. It was so amazing staying in five-star hotels. Getting to work with some of the top people in the music industry was a huge privilege."

'It's great to be home'
He said it was awesome to perform in the competition and although the atmosphere was a bit tense on the recording day he felt he got a fairly good response from the judges and added that the voting numbers was very positive for him as it "got my record company jumping up and down" in elation.

Winckler said he watched the UK version of the competition when it was screened on television in South Africa and he was aware of how popular Young was. He said beating Young in the World Idols competition was a huge compliment and a confidence booster. "I'm very chuffed about beating him."

He will try to cash in on the positive response he got at the competition by attempting to enter the international market.

Winckler will be relocating to Johannesburg as it will be easier for him to liaise with his record company.

"We are looking for a good single and once we find a song we believe in, we will release it in as many countries as possible.

'I had loads of fun'
We are still in the planning phase but there is definitely the potential for us to enter the international market."

He is hoping to release a new single soon, while the World Idols competition still has everyone talking.

But the move to the City of Gold is more than just a strategic business move. Winckler says it is time for him to move on with his life and experience new and different things.
