Swift police action on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of a Durban man less than 24 hours after a man, believed to be his lover, was found strangled at a Sydenham home.
The man was arrested at the Mondi Paper plant in Merebank on Tuesday night. It is believed the suspect may be linked to the brutal death of a man, identified only as A Maharaj and believed to be in his 40s, of Matlock Grove, Sydenham.
Sources said Maharaj was last seen by his mother and niece before they went out. On their return they found Maharaj in his bed, strangled and covered with linen. After police received information on Tuesday they proceeded to the Mondi plant where an arrest was made.

Police spokesperson Dir Bala Naidoo confirmed that Maharaj was found strangled and said it appeared that he may have also been smothered with a pillow and then covered with a duvet.
"Detectives with the Durban Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and a member from the Sydenham Uniform Branch received information and proceeded to Mondi, where they arrested a suspect.
Maharaj's car which was also stolen from his home was found on Tuesday in the Newlands East area.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
