Electronic learning, or e-learning is the use of computers and the internet as a learning method.
Although e-learning is cheaper and faster than sending employees off for classroom-based, instructor-led training, it lacks the human interaction element, says Gary Galanti of Bridge People and Technology.
He advocates a training method that combines classroom and mentoring programmes with e-learning, calling it "blended learning".
"The blend could comprise all available facilities, technology, media and materials. An array of media types exist today including CD-Roms, simulations, video, books and documents, tele and video-conferencing. These teaching techniques and learning aids are easily customised to suit the company or industry and can be used in different combinations."

Galanti says blended learning takes into account all the necessary requirements for adult learning in the workplace, namely motivation to learn, human support to try new technology, learning materials that look like work and encourage transfer of knowledge and skills to the real job, and learning with others.
