Eastern Cape police on Saturday warned job seekers to be wary when asked to pay deposits before employment was properly secured.
Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Andre Beetge said: "There are currently some employment scams being advertised in the newspapers."
He said when the jobs were advertised, applicants were asked to pay a deposit of about R200 for administration costs before taking up "their new posts".
However, when they reported for work they discovered no such positions existed and that the advertiser had vanished with their money.

He suggested applicants only agree to pay deposits after they had started in their new jobs and asked that anyone who had been conned in this way report the matter.
