Police divers retrieved the body of a 43-year-old Cape Town man from a water hazard on a golf course at the Westlake Golf Club on Monday.

He apparently drowned on Sunday night while trying to retrieve lost golf balls from the hazard.

Muizenberg police said Andrew Levine's body had been underwater since late on Sunday night after he and a friend entered the grounds by tunnelling underneath the club's electrified fence.

Police said unemployed Westlake residents often sneak onto the golf course in the early hours of the morning to search for golf balls which they would then sell.

Police spokesperson Andre Trout said Levine's friend raised the alarm when he failed to come up for air.

Police divers started their search on Monday.

"His friend pointed out where the incident happened and early this morning we started the search, but could not find the body," said Trout.

"A team of divers later returned and at 1pm his body was retrieved."
