A Phoenix foster mother is expected to re-appear in the Verulam magistrate's court on January 20 on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm after she allegedly abused four minor children in her care.
At her previous appearance Ragini Maharaj, 38, of Princess Circle, Whitegates, was released on R200 bail.
It is alleged the children were stripped naked, tied to a pole in the hot sun, doused with sugar water and left to the mercy of flies, ants and bees.
The Phoenix police were alerted to the plight of the children - aged four, six, nine and 12 - by a neighbour after the 12-year-old complained that she had been whipped with a sjambok.

They were abandoned by their parents in Amanzimtoti a few years ago and were given shelter at a place of safety in the area. After two years they were transferred to a children's home in Chatsworth where they remained for a year before being taken into foster care.
Investigating officer Inspector Sushie Naicker said welfare services were looking for alternate accommodation for the children.
