Northerns right-arm seam bowler and right-hand batsman Steve Elworthy has been called up to join the SA national squad in Colombo as cover for Alan Dawson, who has a strained right calf muscle.

Dawson will remain in Colombo where he will continue to receive treatment.

The squad is in Colombo competing in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Their next match is a day/night semifinal against either England or India on Wednesday.

"We have seen how much swing Dawson got on Friday night in the game against Kenya and we chose Elworthy because he can also get very good sideways movement. So he is not only a seam option - he can also swing the ball," said Pat Symcox, speaking on behalf of the national selectors. "He is also an all-rounder who gives us depth in batting."
