Tunis - The 2004 African Nations Cup to be hosted by Tunisia between January 24 and February 14 consists of two phases, a qualifying competition and a final tournament.
Qualifying competition
Mini-league matches began in September 2002 and the winners of the 13 groups (seven comprising four teams and six comprising three) qualified with the best runners-up (Zimbabwe). Hosts Tunisia and holders Cameroon were guaranteed places at an event first staged in 1957, making it the oldest continental championship.
Finals Tournament
Group phase
The 16 countries were seeded to keep leading contenders like Cameroon and Senegal apart and split into four groups. Each team plays its three opponents once with pool winners and runners-up advancing to the quarter-finals.
