A Kloof family's pet dog is not called Digger for nothing and this week he proved his worth when he dug up a 60mm mortar bomb dating back to World War 2 on their property.
Digger, assisted by Jack, a four-week-old Jack Russell puppy, dug up the bomb at Mark Tomlinson's Kloof home on Wednesday afternoon.
The bomb had been buried for years, covered in sand and rust, under a Wendy house 15 metres from the main dwelling.
Lara Tomlinson said Digger was always digging in the garden for bones, which he had buried for those "in-between snacks".
"Soon after moving into our home in April last year, we built the Wendy house.

"Never did we think that we were building it on top of a bomb," she said.
Tomlinson said that when her husband walked outside on Wednesday, he spotted Digger and Jack scratching and gnawing at something under the Wendy house.
He went over to investigate, and was shocked to see what they had unearthed.
"As he reached them I heard him shout before running back to the house, yelling for me to call the police," she said.
Tomlinson said the police were shocked by what had been found and told them they had done the right thing by phoning for help because people had been known to pick up mortar bombs and wash and polish them before mounting them on their mantelpieces.
Police said that because of the condition of the mortar bomb they were unable to say whether it posed a danger. - Own Correspondent
