London - A British spaniel is 627 stones lighter after a vet removed patio pebbles from her stomach, the Sun reported on Friday.

Belle's owner Maggie Westwood, 47, rushed her pet to the vet after her stomach "blew up like a balloon".

It took vet Antonio Fratello two hours to remove the 627 small stones, weighing 1,6kg, from the relatively small dog.

"It's the most amazing thing I've seen in my career. Dogs swallowing stones is common, but it's normally three or four. This could easily have killed her," he told the British tabloid.

Westwood of Halesowen in the West Midlands now has patio pebbles that are too big to bite, but Belle's appetite for stones is undiminished.

"We had to stop her eating stones in the vet's car park when she had her stitches out. We have to keep an eye on her," Westwood said. - Sapa-DPA
