Bregenz, Austria - People in the western Austrian town of Egg are pondering the origin of a ton of cheese found under a bridge on Thursday.
Police made the discovery after an anonymous tip-off, news reports said. Together with local council officials, police found the cheese stashed in packets in a ravine beneath a highway bridge.
Judging by its odour, the Bregenz Wood "Bergkaese" brand cheese had clearly been in its hiding place at least since last autumn, officials said.
"Bergkaese" is highly-spiced even when fresh.
The council workers impounded the cheese.
How the cheese came to be in the ravine remains a mystery. No theft of such a large quantity had been reported in Egg or its surrounding area.

It may have been stolen in neighbouring Switzerland.
Another theory was that it had been illegally dumped by a manufacturer after being deemed of inferior quality and unfit for human consumption. - Sapa-DPA
