Budapest - Tired of scrubbing graffiti off hundreds of trains, Hungary's national rail carrier on Monday cut a deal with graffiti artists that gives them a free hand with freight cars but asks them to spare those carrying passengers.

The Hungarian Railway Authority (MAV) said it would turn over 50 to 100 wagons that carry luggage and bicycles to those wielding spray cans in the hope that they would no longer deface the rest of the fleet.

"If you can't stop them, you have to come to terms with them," Ferenc Vizsy, head of MAV's passenger train division, told AFP.

Vizsy said 30 to 40 graffiti artists - about half of them wearing ski masks to conceal their identity - showed up Monday morning at MAV headquarters in Budapest to sign the deal.

'It's more like a gentleman's agreement'
"It's more like a gentleman's agreement," Vizsy said, adding that "MAV does not consider graffiti an art form".

Vizsy said 500 to 700 of MAV's 3 000 rail carriages are marked with graffiti.

Last year, the rail authority spent 100-million forint (about R4-million) on removing spray paint from coaches. - Sapa-AFP
