Allesandria, Italy - An Italian firm specialised in illumination techniques has been asked to replace New York's World Trade Centre Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, with a virtual monument made entirely of light, La Stampa newspaper reported on Wednesday.
According to the paper, Space Cannon di Fubine will soon place 7 000-watt xenon lamps in the spot where the towers once stood. A total of 88 lamps will be used to project tower-shaped beams of light up to six kilometres into the sky.
"We are working day and night to complete the project as soon as possible," said company president Bruno Baiardi.

Baiardi said New York City authorities want the light towers to be in place by Christmas and may then decide to turn them into a permanent monument of remembrance for the victims of the September 11 attack.
Based in a town near Turin, Space Cannon has in the past used its powerful xenon lamps to illuminate the Niagara Falls and Mecca. Last year they were used at the Olympics Games in Sydney. - Sapa-DPA
