Bangkok - Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has come under fire from conservationists for eating shark-fin soup and thereby encouraging the killing of sharks, news reports said on Wednesday.
Senator Kraisak Choonhavan, who is chairperson of the local chapter of WildAid, an international conservation group, said the prime minister set a bad example when he feasted on shark-fin at a Chinese restaurant during a high-profile lunch on Monday with former prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa.
"This food has no more nutritional value than various ordinary dishes you can choose from," The Nation newspaper quoted Kraisak as saying.
"I think the prime minister knows nothing about wildlife. Nobody told him. But from now on he should know. If he continues to eat shark-fins he will be admonished."

'I think the prime minister knows nothing about wildlife' WildAid launched a public awareness campaign in mid-2001 warning that eating shark fins contributed to depleting shark stocks in Thai waters.
"If you are an important figure you should be aware about wildlife conservation and the environment before you do something like this," WildAid public relations director Phenthip Chomprang said in relation to Thaksin's faux pas. - Sapa-DP
