Zander de Bruyn proved how good he can be with the cricket ball in hand in taking 5-28 as the Cobras were dismissed for 171 by the Titans in their SuperSport Series match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Thursday.

Only Rory Kleinveldt (39 runs) and Thandi Tsolekile (37) showed any resistance.

Dale Steyn picked up three early wickets and Ethy Mbalathi wrapped up the tail, but the day belonged to De Bruyn and he way he swung and seamed the ball around.

At the close of play, the Titans were 115 for two with De Bruyn (7) and Martin van Jaarsveld (57) at the crease.

In Bloemfontein, the Eagles fumbled to 299 for five in the last two overs of the day after they had a steady start in their match against the Lions.

Centurian Jacques Rudolph and wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk (25) lost their wickets six balls apart with no runs added to the total.

What would have been a good day for the home team turned to disappointment. The Eagles have to win the remainder of their games if they are to defend their title in the SuperSport series.

Lions spinner Werner Coetzee took 2-73 on a wicket which looked to turn square from ball one.

The spinners have already bowled 53 of the 99 overs on the first day and Bojé will play a huge role in his team's effort to win this game.

Rudolph (141) scored his third century of the series and 17th of his career.

He also reached his 6 000th career run. Ryan Bailey (85) was well on his way to record his first century of the season when Justin Ontong ran him out after he and Rudolph attempted a suicidal run.

In East London, a magnificent attacking maiden first-class century by the Dolphins' Kyle Smit stole the show on the opening day of the match between the Warriors and the visiting Dolphins.

At the close, Smit was on 110 and the Dolphins had reached 285 for five. Smit raced to his century shortly after the tea interval after scoring 91 in less than two hours between the lunch and tea intervals.

Smit has faced 136 balls, stroking 21 delightful fours in his 145-minute stay at the crease.

He and Ahmed Amla (55) added 135 in only 121 minutes as they took complete control.

Lance Klusener won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch which had some bounce early on but the Warriors were severely hampered when left-armer, Brent Kops, pulled up in his third over with a hamstring strain and is unlikely to bowl again in the match.

Justin Kreusch conceded only 40 runs off 17 overs, but Warriors skipper Carl Bradfield was forced to use part-time bowlers. The Dolphins ended the day on 285/5.
