Washington - United States President George Bush on Wednesday congratulated President Thabo Mbeki on the country's third democratic elections last week and his party's victory in the vote.
"The United States also congratulates the people of South Africa as they celebrate on April 27 the 10th anniversary of freedom and democracy replacing apartheid rule," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.
It welcomed "the peaceful exercise of democracy demonstrated by the government and people of the Republic of South Africa."
"All competing parties deserve recognition for playing their role in a multi-party democracy," said Bush. "We commend their acceptance of the outcome and their use of the legal system and the rule of law to resolve disputes."

Mbeki's African National Congress party won 69,68 percent of the vote in South Africa's third democratic elections, its biggest win in 10 years of power.
The main opposition Democratic Alliance was far behind with 12,37 percent of the ballot and the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party was in third place with 6,97 percent. - Sapa-AFP
