Tripoli - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the head of the African Union, has called on Caribbean nations to join the grouping.

"These countries are considered to be African, but they are in the Caribbean," he said in opening an AU summit in the coastal town of Sirte in Libya on Wednesday.

Seven Caribbean states had sent delegations as observers, he said.

His surprise invitation to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak at the summit sparked a furore. Iran said on Wednesday the trip had been cancelled. - Sapa-AFP
