Storms, fog and ash - and you thought we had it bad

There's a distinctly wintry feel about Cape Town's weather, with a howling south-wester, driving rain - and even the chance of some snow on the mountains of the Western Cape on Monday.

But if you think we've got it bad, spare a thought for Scotland, where two sailors, a Pole and a Latvian, were killed in separate accidents on Sunday during heavy storms that severed sea and air links between the mainland and the Shetland Islands.

Or Los Angeles, where nearly 200 cars and trucks collided on a foggy stretch of Long Beach Freeway, injuring dozens, nine critically, and closing the highway for hours.

'You could feel your car moving, knowing that other cars are still hitting you'
"The fog was thick and all you saw on the horizon was the cars piled up in both directions," said one driver, Rob Ziegler. "You could hear all the crashing and the banging. You could feel your car moving, knowing that other cars are still hitting you."

And the Greek island of Cephalonia, best known as the setting for the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, was on Sunday covered by dark grey ash spewed from Sicily's Mount Etna, 500 km away.

Winds have blown volcanic ash from Etna, which erupted last week, to the island in the Adriatic Sea and meteorologists said the region should brace for more.

In north-east Ecuador, the government declared a state of emergency late yesterday after the El Reventador volcano rumbled back to life after lying dormant for 26 years.

Around 1 500 residents in the immediate vicinity of the volcano were immediately evacuated from their homes, while Quito's international airport, some 180km away, was shut down as ash coated its runway.

An earthquake hit the Tanzanian capital of Dodoma on Monday, causing some cracks on the walls of the country's parliament, with aftershocks sending members of parliament in a stampede from the building to safety.
