Former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota said he "served divorce papers" to the African National Congress (ANC) on Wednesday, but stopped short of announcing a new political party.

Lekota instead called on "all who share our concerns to join in a collective effort to defend our movement and our democracy".

Asked whether this meant he was announcing the formation of a new political party, he replied: "I will say it when I choose to say it".

But earlier, during the news conference in Johannesburg, he told reporters: "It seems to me we have been serving today divorce papers".

'He is leading the ANC away from its policy'
This was in response to a question on whether he was seeking marriage counselling or a divorce from the ANC.

He criticised the new ANC leadership elected in Polokwane in December and specifically party leader Jacob Zuma.

"He is the legitimate leader of the ANC. Nevertheless, he is leading the ANC away from its policy," said Lekota.

He added that the ANC no longer seemed committed to the principles of equality before the law.

"Even when we steal money, like any other thief, we will be locked up. If you steal and you are black or white - jail. That is something we must teach now, it doesn't matter if you are... the leader of the ANC, the law will apply to you," said Lekota

'You and those who share your views are giving notice to leave the ANC'
He said that hundreds of ANC members at branch level, were unhappy with the way in which the current ANC leaders were deviating from party principles.

He said he would call for a public convention to discuss this.

That would be the beginning of a "process that we will set in place", apparently to start a new organisation.

Lekota last week sharply criticised the new African National Congress leadership in an open letter to secretary general Gwede Mantashe.

Lekota resigned alongside ousted former president Thabo Mbeki who was removed from office by the national executive committee of the ANC.

Several cabinet members, seen to be Mbeki loyalists, and former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa, resigned following his departure from office, fuelling rumours of the formation of a new opposition party.

Lekota in his letter accused the new ANC leaders of steering the organisation "away from the established policy priorities and customary democratic norms of the ANC".

But Transport Minister Jeff Radebe, an ANC NEC member, responded: "Put bluntly, you and those who share your views are giving notice to leave the ANC". - Sapa

I am surprised that the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu should be mourning so much for the fallen President Thabo Mbeki and even threaten to strip himself his hard-won rights to vote next year.During an acrimonius scuffle with the then President, the Archbishop himself promised to " pray for President Mbeki".Now the results of the Archbishop Emeritus' prayers are devastating indeed even to the Archbishop himself.

The ANC was always a collective of people made up of diffrent races, religious and political idiologies. In short the only thing that really held it together was the apartheid policy and state which was the common enemy and respect for some of the finest leaders this continent and for that matter the world has produced in the last 100 years. Men of principle and honour. How that has changed. Firstly their is no longer a common enemy and secondly without a strong ethical and principled leadership they have turned on each other. Not only in African cultures but most cultures around the world respect for ones elders is expected. No longer in the ANC is this the case. People like Malema and his followers use their bare backsides to express their opinions. This leaves one wondering at times from which end of the body their statements are being made so ridiculous are they.Senior leaders who should be disciplining these boys are silent.I once heard someone say that when Malema appears on TV to spew his nonsense they can no longer even eat. I agree. It is time for politics in this country to be contested on the basis of clear cut policy available to the public so we can choose what we want. Should the majority choose the SACP we as citizens in a Democratic country will have to accept that choice. The reality is that this coalition of conflicting ideologies cannot last. Please tell me what Vavi and Nzimandi have in common with Tokyo Sexwale ? ( Nothing) Comrade Lekota if you form a party that is balanced between ensuring that our children our elders our sick and poor are a priority and that our economy is healthy vibrant and balanced. But most of all it strives to restore the dignity of all people I will be by your side all the way. I accept and respect Mr. Lekota's resignation from the ANC. Honestly, he's lost all respect from me the day he decided to deal with issues of the organisation in an unethical manner. Firstly, what has Terror done to warrant even a public spactacle abou his resignation. Secondly, I think he has shown a lack of emotional intelligency which has prompted me to thank God we were never in a national crisis that would warrant him as the defense minister to act promptly. If he and his friends decide to go against the ANC, we say God bless! Remember one thing, the ANC has always had a basic foundation of letting the people govern. Now that the people have spoken in Polokwane, he and his friends are trying to turn the ANC into their own little heaven. Go well Terror, we WILL find someone to fix the mess you've left in the defense ministry.

It is so funny how some people jump on the stage and begin to sing songs about the ANC they claim deviated from its policies. The same people are the ones who almost threw our democray into bins by chasing after non progressive stances on presidents that remain in power until they die. If there is anyone to blame about the mess we are in today, its very same stiff headed coterie that is now screaming fowl play. Personally I do not support JZ for president in the same that I hate lifetime presidents. I hope and pray that the masses of the ANC will continue holding everyone accountable as they did with the Mbekyists in defense of our democracy.

One can only hope that Terror and associates will come to their senses and realise that shouting from the rooftops will not help their situation. If they are testing the waters they will be seen for what they are .i.e. unsure of themselves such that they avoid doing things the way they were done when they were in charge by subjecting themselves to the discipline of the ANC. No one was ever allowed the space to do things that Terror is doing. You are advised to engage the ANC in a proper way or you are finished Terror.

I don't think its the good decision to split and form a new organisation that alone shows that he (Mr Lekota) doesnt have a back borne and is a coward cannot fight for his party. As far as I am concerned all those comrades who intends to form a new party must call a mass meeting and negotiate with JZ's camp and come up with the solution so that they can pinpoint the problem and work on it. Where is his (Mr Lekota)'s loyalty for his organisation? yes I'm on his side because JZ does not deserve the position that he's serving because of his Mischievous behavior thus he must face the consequences. Let's come up with other solution to fight this but not to split ANC is not JZ's charity, it is a political party for everyone who's the member of ANC.

We are excersing democracy, JZ said so. If someone is not happy with the way things are done, in this case Mr Lekota is not happy with the ruling party leadership. ANC has gone from bad to worsre. To ANC members, how come some of your members burn the posters of the former President of the Republic( T-Bose), that's high treason in everyway you looking at it . It seems ANC looking things at one side of the coin or favours JZ. Chicken heads(Vavi . Blade Nzimande, Julius Malema) are being used, and to Mr Lekota well done!!!, however, splitting from ANC wouldn't resolve current crisis at the ruling party.
