Salzburg - A couple touring the west Austrian Salzburg Alps got the shock of their lives when their car was hit by a falling cow, police said on Thursday.

In the incident on Wednesday, the couple were emerging from under an overhead wooden scaffolding to protect drivers from avalanches when the cow crashed down on their bonnet.

According to their report, the animal had been grazing on the grass-covered top side of the scaffolding when it lost its footing and plunged down five metres.

The 36-year-old wife was taken to a local hospital with injuries. Her husband, also aged 36, was unhurt. The bonnet was completely crushed and the car a write-off, said police.
