 Ethiopia's Zenawi calls for more global aid

Addis Ababa - The seventh Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the European Union and the countries of the Africa Caribbean Pacific (ACP) group got under way in Ethiopia on Monday with a call by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi for more EU development aid.

The Ethiopian leader told the 500 or so participants of the assembly - including parliamentarians from 77 ACP countries and 15 EU states - that the partnership between the two groups "must evolve in the direction of increasing the amount and improving the quality of development assistance".

Meles acknowledged the generosity of EU development assistance, but said "a dramatic increase in development assistance was required to achieve the goals that we have all set for ourselves in the Millennium Development Goals".
