Moroni - The defence minister of the Indian Ocean's Comoro Islands announced his resignation on Friday, days after losing his bid for a seat in a federal assembly.
"I have just handed in my resignation to the president of the republic (Azali Assoumani) to allow him to better manage the post-election situation calmly," Hamada Madi Bolero said in a statement.
Azali's supporters were badly beaten in the polls by a loose alliance of politicians centred around the presidents of the Comoros' three autonomous islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli.
"I am resigning from the government, but not from politics," Bolero told reporters when asked about his plans.

"I believe that the new Comoros can work, as long as future leaders have the necessary patience to set up all the structures and make them work," he added.
After the tiny country was plunged into crisis in 1997 by the unilateral secession of Moheli and Anjouan, a new constitution was adopted in 2001, which granted considerable autonomy to the isles in an effort to keep the Comoros as a single sovereign entity and smooth relations between its squabbling politicians. - Sapa-AFP
