At least 16 people have died of food poisoning after having eaten commercially produced porridge in northern Ivory Coast, the health ministry said Monday.

Teams of health officials were sent Sunday to the affected region of Bongouanou, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) north of Abidjan, ministry spokesperson Simeon N'Da told AFP.

Three more people in "serious" condition have been admitted to hospital, he added.

The victims who died all ate a commercially produced porridge made with millet on November 20, including the woman who sold the porridge and six members of her family, the health ministry said.

No further details of the suspected toxic porridge were released.
