Cricket South Africa on Friday named 26-year-old Ryan McLaren and 25-year-old Heino Kuhn as new caps in their various limited overs squads for the approaching series against Zimbabwe and England.

McLaren, an all-rounder from the Diamond Eagles franchise, has been included in the ODI squad for the two-match MTN series against Zimbabwe as well as the first three matches of the MTN series against England and the two Standard Bank Pro20 Internationals.

This is one of three changes to the Proteas' Standard Bank ODI squad that did duty in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament. McLaren takes the place of Robin Peterson while two long-serving Proteas players, Herschelle Gibbs and Makhaya Ntini, drop out to make room for Alviro Petersen of the bizhub Highveld Lions and Charl Langeveldt of the Nashua Cape Cobras.

McLaren and Langeveldt have recently given up their Kolpak status which makes them eligible for the Proteas again while Petersen has been a stand-out performer both for South Africa A and in the domestic competitions in which he scored a record number of centuries last season.

Kuhn, a wicketkeeper-batsman from the Titans franchise, gets his chance in the 20 overs format of the game for the two Standard Bank Pro20 Internationals against England. This is the first indication the selectors have given in their long-term succession plans for Mark Boucher behind the stumps.

Loots Bosman also makes a comeback to the Proteas squad for the Pro20 series.

"It is never easy to leave out senior players, particularly when they are men of the calibre of Herschelle Gibbs and Makhaya Ntini who have given such wonderful service over a long period of time," commented selection convener Mike Procter. "But we also have to keep looking forward and reward those players who are knocking strongly on the door.

Don, are you nuts or what? The Cobras did damn well and sure as hell did not choke. They were narrowly beaten by a very, very good T&T team.

Enjoy your tiddlywinks while the rest of us appreciate some fine cricket.

This is a travesty of justice – what is the reason for Gibbs omission?

My take its personal – what was his performance for the National team

In the pro20’s & ODI’S – the selectors & couch should really be on

Drugs – a really sad day in SA Cricket

To drop Herschelle and Makhaya just shows hoe pathetic the SACB are. I want to make something very clear here: Mickey Arthur is not the man for the job , point! He can't motivate the team when it comes to the big stage and his results is dividend to that. We have the right players , (besides Albie Morkel) , but we need a coach that can inspire, motivate and lead the team. RAY JENNINGS IS THE MAN,POINT!!!

You know what is really funny, in the ICC championship it was the bowlers that was absolutely useless. The batsmen did to some extent at least come to the party. Now they bring in Ryan McLaren who has just now recently been carted all over the park in the 20/20 PROVINCIAL games in India and hardly scored any runs. Gibbs had a bad form in the first 3 games and when he finally comes good and scores an excellent 42 yesterday what happens he gets dropped. Why not drop useless Albie Morkel who can't bowl and doesn't know what side of the bat to grip anymore. No we rather bring in another okayish all rounder in McLaren. Where is Tsotsobe, although I saw him pre-season and he picked up a lot of weight. You know what is even funnier is the fact that players from the Eagles who couldn't make it through the league stage in the Champions 20/20 gets rewarded with a place and the same goes for Kallis and company in the IPL team. But the team that made it to the semi's in the Cape Cobras no their players gets dropped from the team. Just look how well the team did without Captain stupid, Smith. I am sorry to say this but I think there is a real problem in our cricket with "baatjies vir boeties" and if you aren't part of that clique you will not be selected. What about taking someone like Plaaitjies with for experience, even commentators like Ravi Shastri was impressed with him in the champions 20/20. Does the selectors even know players like him exists ?
