Centurion, South Africa - Former star allrounder Shaun Pollock said South Africa did not deserve to be branded "chokers" despite being eliminated after the first round of the Champions Trophy which ended on Monday.

The Proteas, who played the least amount of international cricket of the eight teams in the build-up, have not won a major international title since lifting the Champions Trophy 11 years ago.

"It's difficult to find reasons why things went wrong," Pollock told AFP.

"There are always two teams and sometimes the other team just play better on the night.

"I think South Africa were a bit rusty in their first game (a loss to Sri Lanka) and in their second (a win against New Zealand) they played really well.

"In their third game I think they were just beaten by an England side that played as well as they have at any stage in the tournament."

But Pollock insists there is no need to press alarm bells as long as the Proteas learnt from their failures.

"There is no need to panic," he stressed. "There is still a lot they can take out of this tournament."

Pollock said India had simply been unlucky after their second match against Australia was washed out.

"I would have expected them to go through," Pollock said.

"They're the form team in world cricket at the moment but, unfortunately, they had a no-result against Australia.

"I think they played really well against Pakistan in their first match (which they lost), but Pakistan were just better on the day."

With the hosts and crowd-pullers India eliminated, attendances dropped.

And despite South Africa and England announcing changes to their domestic one-day competitions to maintain enthusiasm while the Twenty20 format develops a strong following, Pollock said there remained a place for the 50-over format on a busy international schedule.

"I think there's still a place for it," he said. "There's no doubt that the buzz word at the moment is T20, but nobody knows what's going to happen five years down the line," he warned.

"I think it's good that the World Cup is still every four years, which gives it some prestige over a biennial tournament." - AFP

Hi dont think the Proteas choked as that would mean they had the game in their hand and let it slip we clearly saw against England and New Zealand they were way out of their depth on the day what Van der Merwe is doing in the limited overs team is anyone's guess 20/20 maybe ...and Duminy needs to forget about the heroics down under and get back down to business .....We scream number one this and that but then moan and complain when we dont perform new coach new captain new philosophy....

Despite what Pollock says, the EVIDENCE is there and it points to the fact that the South African cricket team ARE actually chokers. Time and time again. Saying that they are not simply isn't going to change things - winning a tournament or two will.

You bunch are pathetic, how can you call yourself a supporter if you only support your time when they win. Limited overs cricket has an element of luck to it and on any given day the best team may not win. To get a true reflection you need a round robin format but this is not what the marketeers of our world like. Either support another team or stop whining about our team!

Pollock is just trying to cover up the dismal performance by his former teammates, as he was also part of the previous teams that broke our hearts. He needs to state things as they are,South Africa choked.

Unfortunately it would appear that the only thing the Proteas are currently really good at is bragging. This seems to have come back to bite them in the nether regions (or is it the leg - Graeme Smith's limp was impressive). Somebody has to stop telling them "you're the man; what a winner!" and start instilling some true team spirit otherwise the Proteas are going to end up being out and out losers.

Shaun Pollock , please be honest with yourself. The team's performance needs to be placed at the feet of the coach. Why is it every time the team get kicked out of a major tournament , then somebody stands up for Mickey Mouse and says that there is no need to panick. We as South Africans and loyal supporters of the team , want results and no more excuses. The fact is that Mickey is not the right person for the job and the empty trophy cabinet states that fact. Get someone who can really motivates the team , because we have the players to do the job , but the belief isn't there when it comes to the big stage. Ray Jennings is the man for the job and he allready proved that fact with the win in West India.

Baggering and Insults does not and will never work. I think it's time we consider the real facts and that is Our Cricket team needs a bit of Skit Skop en dinges! As for Mickey Arthur he needs to shake hands pickup his cheque and move on. His done what he could but it's not enough. We need fulfilling tournaments all year round so that we can be prepared for these sorts of Big Events. I think Our Bowling let us down more than the batting on the day we lost to England. Some of the Players repeated get's given the chance to Play just because of their Names but not if they are inform. Yes Chockers or whatever you want to call these okes they clearly aren't doing the job worst of all in their own Backyard! Reminded me of the World in the West Indies. How about we get a Coach that can actually drill the players instead of the Players voicing their opinions like its a free for all. Graeme Smith lead as a Captain but the others listen to their IPods and clean their Oakleys instead of working on their Mental and Physical ability.

To depart the competition in the first round and at the bottom of our group. The trophy cabinet sits empty. No titles for 11 years. The track record is evident to a blind man. How can you even try to defend this history... by denial. Get real these guys are (so called) professionals getting paid for non delivery. In business they would be fired.
