A government team was sent to assess storm damaged areas in the Eastern Cape, the department of housing said in Wednesday.

Spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said the team consisted of engineers, inspectors and other supporting officials.

It was deployed "to support the Eastern Cape Provincial Government and Ndlambe Municipality in the storm-hit area of Alexandria" near Port Elizabeth.

The team was already working with officials from the municipality and the province to assess the damage to the houses and infrastructure.

Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said: "The team we have deployed in Alexandria would be able within the coming hours to give the extent of the damage, identify houses that need to be repaired and those that need more serious attention.

More than 50 families were displaced with one person admitted to hospital on Monday when the area was hit by the storm, Mabaya said. - Sapa
