Hundreds of shack dwellers in parts of the city spent yesterday dredging up water and mud from their homes while others were grateful they had been spared from torrential rains.

In Khayamnandi, Stellenbosch there were few signs that the storm had passed over the area on Sunday night.

Children were playing in the streets and people were going about their business as usual, the exception being one woman and some of her neighbours.

When the Cape Times team arrived at her home, Zukiswa Noyile, 27, was removing muddy water from her small shack with a bucket as a paraffin heater warmed up her cold and damp home.

Noyile said she was helpless to stop the flooding when the rains arrived on Sunday.

"I live here, not out of choice but because I don't have many options and I was not expecting my shack to get flooded but the rains caught me by surprise," she said.
