Houston - Briton Lee Westwood held a two-shot lead in the first round of the Houston Open on Thursday when play was abandoned due to high winds at Redstone Golf Club.

Westwood, playing in the third group of the day, was four-under-par through nine holes, while eight players including South Korean Charlie Wi (through five holes) and Americans Justin Leonard and JB Holmes (eight holes) were two strokes back.

University of Houston graduate and 2003 winner Fred Couples was one-under through seven and defending champion Johnson Wagner was one-over-par after six.

The start of the opening round was delayed
The start of the opening round was delayed by two and a half hours due to thunderstorms in the area and was suspended three hours later because of wind and later abandoned.

The last time play was suspended on the US PGA Tour due to high winds was during the fourth round of the 2007 Heritage Classic at Hilton Head, South Carolina. - Reuters
