Ramadi - A suicide bomb attack at a funeral killed five people on Monday in western Iraq where a roadside bombing claimed a sixth life, local officials said.

Five mourners were killed when the bomber set off a belt full of explosives at the funeral in the town of Haditha.

"While people were carrying the coffin, a suicide bomber exploded himself in the middle of the crowd, killing five," Haditha's mayor, Abdel Hakim Mohammed, told AFP.

He said at least 10 people were wounded in the attack in the town, 260 kilometres west of Baghdad in the predominantly Sunni province of Anbar.

In Fallujah, 50 kilometres west of the capital and also in Anbar, a roadside bomb in the centre of town targeting an army patrol killed one civilian.

The explosion, which occurred at 11.30am (08.30GMT), also left three civilians and two soldiers wounded, a police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, another roadside bomb in central Baghdad's Nidhal street, apparently targeting a police patrol, wounded four people, including one policeman, a police official said.

Violent deaths in Iraq dropped by more than half in September compared to the previous month, official figures showed last week, with 203 people killed across the country.

September's death toll was the lowest since May, when a total of 155 people were killed. - AFP
